Are Nantucket Reds really worth it?
So I was thinking about my new lobster patterned shorts from J Crew and I began thinking about Nantucket Reds. Are Nantucket Reds actually good looking, or are we just told that they are, and even though they are a strange salmon pink, we suddenly want to buy them?
Think about it. These are a $75 pair of overalls which kind of look like they should
be worn by a five year old. Yet people come to Nantucket in droves straight to Murray’s Toggery Shop to buy these and other clothes. A pink hat with ACK, the call symbol for the Nantucket Airport, is instantly a hit among frat boys and preps. Are we all just buying into it because we think that is what people from Nantucket wear? Other preppy clothes I understand; they are well made and look good on people. I don’t even think Nantucket Reds look that bad. It just seems rather extreme that nearly all of their products are the same color, and not particularly attractive, yet people still pay nearly $100 for everything in the store. That’s good marketing for ya; getting people to want to buy a product and envy those who have it, not because it looks good, but simply because it is a certain recognizable color. Well played Murray’s Toggery Shop. Well played…
