Preppy Societies
One thing about being preppy is the exclusivity of it all; having a lifestyle that others yearn for. It is one thing to be young and dress in Vineyard Vines and Nantucket Reds, using your own or your parents’ money, and it is another to join an exclusive club only for the wealthy. This weekend I learned that my grandfather was in the Union League Club. This surprised me because although he himself is quite wealthy, he never struck me as one to join such a prestigious gentlemen’s club as that. I started looking into it, and preppy societies have begun to fascinate me. I think it stems from the little boy mindset, of having a tree or club house and having a sort of club with your friends with “No Girls Allowed”, something that girls do as well at the same age. Something about joining such an upscale society such as the Union League Club, Freemasonry, or prestigious yacht clubs and country clubs, seems incredibly appealing. I assume it is a male thing for the most part, due to the large number of fraternal organizations and gentlemen’s clubs, however there are some for women as well. These societies give a sort of label to your preppiness, allowing you to claim membership to something exclusive. In addition to this these clubs provide a kind of support group of business contacts; I’m sure many important business deals have been made in the halls of the Union League and other gentlemen’s clubs.

Unfortunately though, in order to stay exclusive these clubs must have high standards of whom they admit, as well as very high membership fees. Guess I’ll just have to wait a few decades of being successful in the stock market…
