How to Look Preppy
from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit
Prep is someone who cares about their appearance enough to look good — but not so much that they are superficial. They are conservative, clean cut, classy and classical.
Steps
- Get the attitude. An important quality of a prep is their ability to be happy, bubbly, and very social. Look on the bright side all the time and be happy with who you are, and encourage people to do the same. Act friendly and outgoing… a little shy is OK, but be nice. Smile. Stand up straight. Avoid getting people angry. Forget talking about money or politics-it can put people off. Being snobby shows poor breeding. Preps have a friendly attitude and good manners. Read Etiquette books or take etiquette classes. Good manners are very important to preps. It shows people you have had a good upbringing. Use basic politeness such as please, thank you and excuse me. Be considerate and hold doors for people. Don’t wear a hat indoors. Keep your cell phone in check and put it on vibrate when you go to a public place.
- Be social; make new friends and practice being more outgoing. Throw a party for no reason every so often. Try to keep the party drug and sex free. You can be the life of the party but still be classy at the same time. For example, if you are at a party you won’t be anti-social or drinking like a drunk and slobbering all over the place. Rather, you will have nursed one drink all night, socialized and not be acting like an idiot.
- Get your clothes from a traditional, upper class store. Get timeless classic clothes that will always look stylish. DO get brands such as Ralph Lauren, Brooks Brothers, Vineyard Vines, Lacoste,Tommy Hilfiger, J. Crew, Martha LeWren, Nantucket Brand,Ann Taylor, and Lilly Pullitzer. A common misconception is that clothes from Hollister, Abercrombie and Fitch & A.E. are preppy, but a traditional prep would disagree. These brands are for wannabe preps and normal teens.
- Buy the preppy style clothes. Just because you got some clothes from an upper class store doesn’t mean they are preppy. Buy clothes that are classic, and clean-cut. Don’t be afraid to splurge on these a little, as preps tend to hold onto clothes for a long time. Remember to make sure your clothes are always clean, and always match. Good fabrics are very important. Get rid of any polyester. Buy mostly 100%cotton, wool and cashmere. Wear preppy colors. Bright and happy, like green, pink, light blue… nautical red, white and navy blue and preppy patterns- plaid, stripes, gingham, polka dots, argyle, floral, paisley, nova checks, tartan.

- Preppy guys wear leather moccasins, suede loafers, boat shoes (top-siders) or leather flip flops. For formal wear they wear leather dress shoes in black or brown.
-

- Stay fresh and clean. Take a shower at least once a day. Brush you teeth and wash your face twice a day. Shave as often as you need to for smooth skin. A prep always takes care of themseves. If you have bad skin than see a dermatologist.
- Keep makeup light. Don’t wear a lot of eyeliner, or wear none at all. Go very easy on the foundation, and wear a little lip gloss. Remember, less is more! If you can get away with no make up, you can still look like a preppy girl if you’re well-dressed and hygienic. Many preppy girls are clean faced.
- Maintain your nails. Whether you keep them short and clean or get them done, they should be uniform. Don’t let the skin around them get dry to the point that they crack, and stop biting your nails. If you paint them, go for a a natural French manicure, clear polish, or even neutral, solid-colored polish (not bold, like red or blue or black). Don’t let the polish chip off, and don’t let your nails get too long. Nails should be in neutral colors and medium short in length on girls and trimmed short on boys.
- Smell nice. Wear a light perfume or colonge that’s not too overpowering. Make sure to only dab it on lightly. Being hygienic and applying deodorant will also ensure that you smell good even when the perfume/colonge wears off.
- For men, a clean shave is a must. No facial hair, whatsoever.Clean cut and all American. Keep simple hair. A common preppy hairstyle is the shaggy look or the fluffy look, or hair just parted on the side and short.Keep your lips moisturized. Chapped, cracked lips are unsightly. No unnatural hair color or shaved hair. Keep your hair looking natural! Always smell fresh. Pick one ‘clean’ scent to stick with. Make sure it is not overpowering.
- Keep your hair clean and well-trimmed. Shampoo and condition your hair every day or every other day, depending on your hair type. Get your hair cut at least two times a year, or how many times needed to maitain your style. Get your hair done at a quality salon, they really take good care of your hair.
- For preppy girls, there are many traditional hair styles. Such as the bob, sholder length hair, long hair, bangs and side bangs. When styling your hair follow the tips in the Style Preppy Hair article.
Tips
- Understand the difference between looking like a prep as a girl and looking like a prep as a guy.
- Play sports. Guys often participate in crew (rowing), polo, golf, tennis, lacrosse, swimming, squash, rugby, skiing, or sailing. Girls, try some tennis, swimming, horseback riding, golf, fencing, cheerleading, ballet and lacrosse. Staying in shape is a very important characteristic of a prep. Preps have toned athletic bodies and are never overweight. Remember, you want to look good in your new Lilly dress. So maintain a healthy weight by eating a balanced diet, drinking plenty of water, and exercising.
- The preppy look is basically a neat, well-balanced, put-together look that can be achieved by combining the right colors, patterns, and accessories. It is never trashy, mall trendy or overdone. Simple, classic and clean.
-
- UN-preppy:
- Too much gaudy, tacky, flashy, ultra-chunky jewelry/ too much makeup-keep it natural. Don’t try to look older with makeup it just makes you look cheap.
- Trashy, too tight revealing clothes. Anything showing too much flesh. Girls- NO Plastic surgery to get bigger breasts! Small or medium chested girls are more classic. Anything with labels or bling is out. Modest clothes might seem bland but prep girls wear them.
- Too much makeup of unnatural shades (like bright red lipstick combined with purple and blue eyeshadow).Don’t even wear eyshadow.
-
- If you are moving towards a preppy look, it may be best to change slowly but surely.
- Don’t be fake. Remember to stay true to yourself. While following preppy guidelines, be careful not to specifically copy the wardrobe of another person.
- If you are old enough to wear perfume or cologne, you may want to try Martha LeWren’s ‘double up’ perfumes; they smell amazing, but subtle, and they come in sets of two, so you won’t get de-sensitized. Lighty spray.
- You need to wear a sheer foundation that matches your skin tone. Then find a light lip gloss.
- Don’t forget to do this gradually, one polo top at a time. Also try changing over a long break, otherwise you may be called a poser.
- If a preppy comes up to you and compliments you-say thank you. You can tell him/her that you really like their style and they inspire people to dress well.
Warnings
- If you make these changes all at once, people may call you a fake. Better to take it one polo shirt at a time.
- Clothing brands like Abercrombie & Fitch, Hollister, and American Eagle are often considered to be fake or tacky. (Unless you’re in high school) These can work however, but you need to know what to look for.
- Don’t ever talk about money. Respectable preps never talk about money because it is ill-mannered and classless. Even if you hear someone who has money bragging about their “toys” or big house- just keep your mouth shut.
- Avoid flashy labels such as shirts that say “DIOR” or “A & F” on them. this makes you seem too flashy and you should stick to the basics. Avoid designer labels written on tee shirts-it looks stupid.
- Avoid purses that have logos all over them because it makes you seem, again, too flashy and that you are trying too hard. Keep it simple. A nice canvas tote is alway good to haul your things around. Many prep girls never even carry purses-they keep things in their backpacks.
- “Bling” does not mean wealth. It means no class. Put away the flashy cell phone and carry books instead.

Preppy Sneakers
Okay so first of all I apologize for using the word preppy in just about every title, but it helps the blog rank better in google, so I get more visitors which is worth it for me. So please bear with me…
Anyways back to the topic at hand. I got a suggestion to talk about shoes and so I thought I would. Today I am going to talk about sneakers, because I am young, and besides sandals, they are what I wear most of the time. Also, I am only going to talk about ones that are under $100. I understand that most preppy clothes are quite expensive, and you are paying for quality, but since it is my blog, and I don’t have the resources to spend $200-$400 on a pair of casual shoes, I am going to talk about ones that I could afford.
When going for the preppy look, there isn’t a huge variety of sneakers, but I do like the selection. I would like to mention first that an excellent alternative to sneakers would be Sperry Authentic Original Tops
iders. Sperry does have a great deal of other shoes, most of which are very nice, all of which are extremely well made, but for the preppy look, you have to go with the classic Authentic Originals. I grew up in these things, and although they can be stiff and uncomfortable at first, once they are worn in they are a damn good shoe. Topsiders, not only have a preppy feel, but unlike sneakers they can be both casual and semi formal. Of course you couldn’t wear these with a suit, but they can certainly be worn to certain parties and summer events. Sperry Topsiders are pretty affordable at $65, but ones like the Gold Cup shoes are a little out of my budget at $160. For a very similar look check out Brooks Brothers Boat shoes here
, or find other traditional ones here at J Crew
When I said before that there wasn’t a very big variety of sneakers, I kind of lied. But the truth is that most of the variations aren’t very appealing to me, mostly because many are uncreative. Preppy sneakers have become almost an after thought, because it is assumed that they aren’t really a particularly preppy item. So while skateboard companies are producing thousands of different shoes, because that is what their customers want, preppy companies make far fewer. So I’m only going to talk about sneakers that I would certainly wear, and ones that I think look good with most clothes that a preppy person would wear.
The main two variations are leather and canvas, and I think I’ve gotten a pretty good mix of both. Canvas sneakers are not quite as sturdy or thick as leather ones, but they have a much preppier feel and look.
Lacoste Shakespeare 3: A sort of blend between the boat shoe and the sneaker. These a
re $130 on Zappos, so a little pricey, but very nice looking. The alligator on the side I feel really adds something and goes well with the navy and white laces. These are good for when you don’t want to wear boat shoes, but still want a slightly preppier look than normal sneakers.
.
.
.
Next there is the Ralph Lauren Roster 3 Leather Sneakers. Although I am not a huge fan
of the white and dark green, these are a sharp looking pair of sneakers, and the pony on the tongueis a nice touch. These look more like sneakers you would run in or play a sport, rather than just every day use, but they are preppy enough to go with some outfits. At $65 they are reasonably priced as well.
.
.
.

Third, there is the Lacoste Recoil 2. This shoe is similar to the Roster 3 in that it has a more sporty than everyday feel, but with the flat laces and streamlined shape, it is a little bit more functional with preppy clothes. Like all Lacoste shoes however, it is expensive and somewhat hard to find. Zappos does not carry it and it can’t be found in Lacoste’s online store so I assume its quite new. Like the other Recoil sneakers, I expect it to cost around $125, when it does become available.
.
Now on to canvas sneakers. The first pair I like is the Lacoste L34 Canvas Sneaker
s. These cream colored shoes look a little thicker than most canvas sneakers, so I assume they are a little more comfortable. Since they are cream colored, they go with a lot of different outfits and can be worn with both shorts and pants. That’s what I love about canvas sneakers, they can be worn with shorts without looking goofy, when leather sneakers usually cannot. The Lacoste L34’s here cost $90.
.
I particularly like these Ralph Lauren Brendall Canvas Sneakers from Ralph Lauren. The gold stripes on the side make them a little more interesting, and the navy with the white toe, is very preppy looking. Just like white or cream shoes, these navy ones can be worn with a wide variety of clothes, and aren’t too expensive at $69.
.
.
.
The final pair of canvas sneakers that I like are the Ralph Lauren Blake Herringbone Canvas Sneakers. A very simple and slightly retro look, these shoes have a nice logo on the tongue and le
ather back to keep them interesting. Like the Brendall sneakers, they are preppy enough to be worn with most outfits including shorts. At $59 they are also affordable. Ralph Lauren usually lowers the price of their sneakers significantly towards the end of their lifespan, so I picked up a pair of Dungan washed Canvas Sneakers for only $39 recently.
.
.
So there you have it. Event though its the summer now, and most people are wearing sandals, its still a good time to examine your sneakers. I have a friend who thinks he dresses preppy, but he only wears white New Balances. Sorry but that just doesn’t cut it. These shoes show that there are preppy sneakers out there, and that it is still possible to have a good looking preppy outfit with a pair of sneakers.
Next time I’ll talk about Loafers and mocasins, the other types of casual shoe, and after that Sandals. I don’t know if there’s really a need to talk about formal shoes, as there aren’t really any that are considered preppy. Preppy people dress in nice clothes , and since all formal clothes are nice clothes, formal shoes don’t really have anything to do with preppiness…
